  Generation One

_______ Hood

We do not know the country of origin of our Hood Family line nor do we know the name of the earliest Hood to live in this country. The Hoods probably came from Holland as the  families into which they married were Dutch, they used Dutch names, and were a part of the Dutch Reformed and Community in Ulster County, New York where we first find them.

As noted above, there are several persons in this family line working on the Hood Family Line for this web site. There are others--such as Zellman Hood and Clyde Hood--as well who have made contributions to Hood Family Research and their work will be noted where appropriate. For the purposes of this web site, the editor has primarily used the work of Lynn Zemanek, whose research seems the most complete. We appreciate her sharing her work with the extended Hood family. Lynn has been been in touch with and/or knows of the research of others persons as well.

.  In trying to find the beginnings of this family in in the United States, it is noted that a will in Ulster County, New York for Lourans Hood mentions a William Hood as a brother. Lourans died on 25 February 1794. (Ulster County Probate Records) An Elizabeth Hood, married to Jacob Wikelo, names two sons, William and Lourance. In the 11790 Census , Jacob Wilkelo is listed after William Hood. Johannis Waldron is the head of the household above William Hood in the 1790 Census.

According to a family member's report in the 1985 Biographical Review for Delaware County, three brothers were in the original family. One brother settled in the Colchester, New York area; another located on the Mohawk River; and the third brother settled in the South and is supposed to be the ancestor of the Confederate General Hood. (Delaware County Biographical Review) The legend could be true. According to General Hood's biography , he descended from the Jasper Hood Family. One of Jasper's sons stayed in the Ulster County, New York area and is said to be the progenitor of all the Hoods in the  area. (Dellman Hood)William Hood settled in the Colchester, New York area. However, the missing link between Jasper's son and William Hood in the church records remains elusive. Clyde Hood, a descendant of General John Bell Hood, does not think that this family is connected to Jasper Hood's family. Frances Dumas on the World Connect Project suggests that William Hood of Lynn's Hood Generation 2] was married twice and that the  children listed below are his. That would be Laurens Hood and Elizabeth Hood. However, the baptismal dates do not fit the fathering by William Hood. Frances Dumas's listing of children of William Hood:

1. William Hood was born 1755. He married about 1772 to Annatye Sluyter; children: Robert Hood, Abraham Hood, Rachel Hood, Anny Eleanor Hood. The daughter and two sons died after 1810.
2. Laurens Hood was born perhaps 1754-1764. He married Sara Walron; children: Isack Hood, John Hood, died about 25 February 1758 in Ulster County.
.
3. Elizabeth Hood was born perhaps 1758 to 1768. She married Jacob Wilkelo; children: Maria Hood, Annatje Hood, Sara Hood, William Hood, Lourance Hood died 1795-1798.

Generation Two

William Hood

+1. William Hood was born in 1755 (1790-1810 Census Records) He married in Annatye Sluyter. Annatye was the daughter of of Johannes Sluyter and Johanna _______. Based on their son Robert's baptism in 1773, they were probably married about 1772 in Ulster County, New York.  Annatye was baptized on 17 April 1756 in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York (Versteeg).

William served in the American Revolution in the 3d Regiment of the Ulster County Militia. in which his father-in-law, John Sluyter and his brother-in-law, Cornelius Sluyter, also served. (New York State Archives) On 25 May 1783, William Hood paid 3s [shillings] in subscription money to the New Paltz Reformed Church, perhaps for a baptism. On 12 August 1809, William Hood was made a member of the New Paltz Reformed Dutch Church "upon confession." (Versteeg) He also signed the Articles of Association [of the church or county?] (Sylvester, History of Ulster County)"

William Hood was in the New Paltz area of Ulster County during the 1790, 1800, and 1820 census. In the 1790 census, William is the male over 16. In his household are 2 males under 16 (Abraham and Robert) and 5 females, who would include his wife and five daughters. In the 1800 census , both William and his wife are listed as adults between 26 and 45. One male 16-26 years is listed, who cloud be Robert; 2 other makes under 10 (William and John Warren), and a daughter between 10 and 16, who could be Eleanor. In the 1810 census, William is  listed as over 45 years. The adult female listed is between 26 and 45. This would not be Annatye because she would be 54 years old. Also in his household is a female between 10 and 16and 5 children (3 males and 2 females) under the age of 10. The two males 10 to 16 could be William's sons, whose names we do not know. His daughters Rachel, Amy, and Eleanor are married and in their own household in the 1810 census. There is the possibility that the female and five children under the age often is another wife and her children from a previous marriage or a daughter of William's not identified whose husband has died. Or it could be his daughter-in-law, Rachel, and some of their children. William Hood has not been found in the 1820 census in Ulster County, New York.

We do not know where William Hood or Annatye died or were buried.

Their children were:
     1. Robert Hood was baptized on 10 October 1773 in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York. He married on 12 April 1801 in New Paltz, Martha Waxman. Their children were: Margaret Hasbrook, Daniel, and James.

Their children were: William, Minar John Warren, Annetje Dubois, Sarah, and others. Abraham Hood died between 1840 and 1850.
     3. Rachel Hood was born about in 1774. She married on 15 March 1796 Jacob Deyo in Shawangunk. Their children were: Methusalem, Elihu, George, and others.
     4. Anny Hood was born about 1784-to 1794. She married Samuel Danelson/Donaldson; Their children were: Catherine, Joseph, Anny Osylla.
     5. Eleanor Hood was born about 1790 to 794. She married Samuel Danelson/Donaldson: their children were Eleanor, Huldah, Sara, Catherine, William.

2. Elizabeth Hood was born perhaps 1758 to 1768. She married Jacob Wilkelo. She died 1795-1798. Jacob W. Wilklow  was living in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York in the 1790 census. In the census were 1 male under 16, 1 male over 16, and 3 females. In the 1800 Census for New Paltz, Jacob Wilklow's family was still living in New Paltz. Jacob was between 26 and 45 and had 3 males under 10, 1 female under 10, and 1 female between 26 and 45. Elizabeth died before 1798 because Jacob remarried in 1798 in New Paltz, Ulster County, New York. (Versteeg)

The children of Elizabeth Hood and Jacob Wilklow were:

     5. Lourance was born on 13 July 1794/1795 in New Paltz, New York. Rachel Hood was them baptismal witness for Lourance (Versteeg) Rachel would have been Williams' Hood's daughter, that is Lourance's aunt,  because the church records generally wrote the female's maiden name, but it could have been Abraham Hood's wife, Rachel.

3. Laurens Hood was born perhaps 1754 to 1764. He married Sara Waldron. Laurens died about 25 February 1794 in Ulster County, New York. Sara Waldron Hood died on 4 December 1849 at the age of 75-7-10 [75 years, 7 months, and 10 days] and was buried in the New Paltz Cemetery. Old Gravestones of Ulster County). Their children were:

+1Robert Hood was baptized on 10 October 1773 in New Waltz, New York. He married on 12 April 1801 Martha Waxman in New Paltz. In the 1800 census for New Paltz, he is probably the male between 16 and 26 living with his father. There are also 2 males under 10, 1 male between 16 and 26, and 2 females under 10. Rachel Deyo, widow, married Abraham Relyea on 29 June 1811. (Versteeg) The children of Rachel Hood and Jacob Deyo were:

The Samuel Donaldson Family is on the same page of the 1810 census for New Paltz, New York as Rachel Hood's and Anny Hood's families. Samuel is between 26 and 45 and Eleanor is between 16 and 26. There is also a male between 16 and 26 and 2 females under 10. Their children are:

He and Rachel are between 16 and 26. Two sons (William and Meindert are under 10. In the 1810 Census, Abraham and his family were in Schoharie County, New York. There are two males between the ages of 26 and 45, one of which is Abraham. The females listed is between 16 and 26, which is probably Rachel although there is a four-year discrepancy in her age, but, she is listed in later censuses. There are two sons under 10 and a daughter under 10. The two sons are probably Meindert and John Warren and the daughter Sarah or Annatye. The extra persons living with William could be Rachel and her children, but if Rachel is with her father-in-law, then who is the adult female and the other adult male. According to the 1820 Census for Colchester, Delaware County, New York, Abraham was over 45 and Rachel between 26 and 45. The three males 16 to 26 would probably be William, Meindert, and John Warren. The female between 16 and 26 could either be Annatye or Sara. There were also five girls under the age of 10. Four people were involved in agriculture as an occupation.

Abraham was an insolvent debtor to Nathaniel Stevens on 17 September 1827 (Delaware County Website) On 24 April 1829 in Hancock, Delaware County "Abraham Hood of Hancock [sold] to Samuel L. Holmes and Co. for $150, quitclaim to a mill lot sold to said Abraham by Joseph Gee and Jesse Baxter, situated on Barker's Brook and on lot 15 and Great Lot 35 of Hardenburgh Patent, 5 acres, beginning at the SW corner of said lot at a bridge." (Delaware County Deeds) Abraham and his family remained in Colchester and were listed there in the 1830 Census. He was between 50 and 60 years and Rachel between 40 and 50. There is a 30 to 4o year-old female who may be a sister of Abraham or Rachel, or one the the two oldest daughters, or a housekeeper. There is a male between 20 and 30, one boy under 5, one female between 15 and 20, two females between 10 and 15, one female between 5 and 10, and 2 females under 5. One female under 5 could be the daughter of the male and female who are 20 to 30. The other females match the ages of Abraham's unidentified daughters. The male under five could be Abraham's son Charles or could be the son of the male and females between 20 and 30. In the 1840 Census for Colchester, Abraham is between 60 and 70, Rachel the female between 50 and 60, two females between 15 and 20, and one females between 10 and 15. The females are probably daughters still living at home. Abraham probably died between 1840 and 1850 as he does not appear as the head of a household in the 1850 Census for Delaware County.

Fourth Generation

+27. John Warren HOOD (Abraham, William) was born on 11 May 1802 in Delaware County, New York and was christened on 11 May 1803 in the Reformed Dutch Church at Shawangunk, Ulster County, New York. (Worden) John married about 1825 Jerusha LEWIS. She was born about 1803 in Delaware County, New York (1855 Census for Tompkins, Delaware County, New York), the  daughter of Henricus (Hendricus) "Henry" LEWIS and Mercy "Minnie" HOLLOWAY  (Pioneer Lewis Families)

In the 1830 Census for Hancock, Delaware County, New York John Hood is between 20 and 30 years of age and Jerusha is between 20 and 30. In this household there were three females under the age of 5. The females were probably Jerusha Adeline  Hood Araminta Hood, and Clarinda Hood. John's family was listed directly below Asa Appley, the father of John's brother William's wife, Nancy Appley. In the 1840 Census for Hancock, Delaware County, New York, John Hood is farming next door to his brother, William Hood. John is between 40 and 50 and Jerusha is between 30 and 40. There are 2 females between 5 and 10 and 2 females between 10 and 15.  Adeline would be about 14, Jerusha would be about 12, and Araminta would be about 10, so two of them could fit in the 10-15 category. Abigail would be about 8, and Mercy would be about 6, so either of them could be in the 5 to 10 category. Mercy, being the youngest female, would most likely be the possibility for the under 5 category, seeing as how trying to fit ages into categories is always a bit of a guess, anyway. There is always the factor of the person giving information making a mistake or the enumerator being careless or not correctly understanding the reporter. .C[harles] Warner Hood would be the male under 5.

By 1850 John and Jerusha must have made a move from Hancock to Tompkins as they were in the 1850 Census for the Town of Tompkins, Delaware County. 2nd Election District, No. 482 [Dwelling? Family? Page]. The 1850 Federal Census is the first census where were family members are identified by name, which is a big help, although Jerusha is mistakenly spelled "Gerusha." John Hood is listed as a laborer, rather than as a farmer as previously. He is about age 48 and Jerusha about 47.  There is a Clarinda at age 10, who certainly isn't the daughter Clarinda born in 1826, so this appears to be an error and someone else. Clarinda was married to Nathan Curtis, Jr. in 1845 and was living elsewhere. Phebe was about 7 and Charles about 2.  There is the possibility that "Clarinda" is Carol C.[larinda?]. In an unidentified newspaper item provided by Mary Cable of Deposit, New York, there was reported the marriage of Jacob Stocking [or Stocking Jacob?], age 69, a farmer from McClure to Carol C. who was born in Hancock and resided in Cannonsville. It said that she was the daughter of John Hood and J. Lewis. If she is the "Clarinda" in the census, then she could have been born about 1840. [This item and maybe a further later census check is probably needed here.]

In the 1855 Census for Tompkins, Delaware County at Dwelling No. 277, Family No. 294,   the Hoods  were living in a frame house valued at $200. John Hood was a farmer at about age 53 and Jerusha Hood was about 52.  The census says that John was from Ulster County and that he had been living in Delaware County for 10 years [since about 1845, having been in Broome County before that] and that Jerusha [Perusha] was born in Delaware County and been in Delaware County for 52 years. [In that case, how do we justify her being in Hancock County in the 1830 and 1840 Census at Hancock?] Abigail Hood was 15, was born in Delaware County, and had lived there for 15 years.  Charles N. Hood was born in Delaware County and had lived there 7 years Phoebe Hood, a servant, was also in the 2nd Election District, is unaccounted for. Abigail Hood,, age 15, was also enumerated as a servant  in the household of Herman Fuller, a farmer at age 29 and his wife Eliza Fuller, age 24, and a son, Smith D. Fuller, age 4. Although Phoebe was not enumerated in this census, in 1855, according to Town of Tomkins School Records, John Hood had three children attending school in District 7.

On 22 January 1856 Jerusha inherited from her parent's--Henry Lewis and Mercy Holloway-- will, a farm at the town of Hancock, Delaware County, New York. It was one-third of S.E. part of lot No. 12 in lot no. 14 in great lot No. 35 of the Hardenburgh patent. She also inherited half of their wearing apparel and personal property. (Delaware County Deed Book, p. 509) On wonders what effect his had on the life of Jerusha and John Hood?

The John Hoods are Family 766 at dwelling 766 in the 1860 Census for Ognaga Post Office, Windsor, Broome County, New York. (pp.762 (left), 88 (right), Lines 22-2. ( HeritageQuest Online Images) Windsor is west of Deposit. John Hood is 88 [probably an error for58], Jerusha 57, Abigail 20, and Warner 17 [which seems to be about 5 years too young according to the his birth year. The somewhat routine New York  for the John Warren Hoods and their children began to change in the late 1850s when their daughters Jerusha Adeline, Araminta, and Mercy began migrating west with their husbands and families. We know events of their lives and visits that the John Hood's made to visit them from the "Isaac Jones's Diaries." The Reverend Isaac Jones was the spouse of Jerusha Adeline. For example,  he mentions in the 1873 Diary that he went to Red Oak, Iowa to a Silas Chamberlain's where Father Hood was visiting. Isaac Jones shaved Father Hood while visiting the Chamberlains. [Silas Chamberlain may be J. Stiles Chamberlain. the spouse of Araminta Hood. Incidentally, this is the last record that we have of John Warren Hood. 1870 Census for Cannonsville, Town of Tompkins, Delaware County, enumerated 27 June 1870, Line 4. John is a farmer age 69, with real estate worth $800 and Line 5. Jerusha is age 66. Rufous Houck and Lucy Houck and their three children live with the Hood's in Dwelling 201, Family 206 and are sharing in the farming. To our knowledge, they are not related to the Hoods.

John Warren Hood has not been found so he probably died before that 1880. Isaac Jones in one of his diaries recorded Jerusha Hood was in 1880 Census for Deposit, Brome County, New York living with her son C. Warner age 32 and his spouse, Mary age 27, and their son Wallace, age 2. (LDS Family History Resource File, FHL Film 1254822, National Archives Film T9-0822 p. 95C)

CENSUS: 1830 New York, Ulster County, New Paltz: National Archives Roll 106, Vol. 23, LDS Film No. 17166, read at the Family History Center, Fort Myers, FL in October 2000, John Hood, 1 male under 5, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 30-40.

CENSUS: 1840 US NY, Ulster County, New Paltz. The film No. 17208 contains Tioga, Tompkins, and Ulster County. Amended 7 Nov. 1840. Vol. 39, No. 74853. There is also a John Hood in the 1840 Census Index for Hancock, Delaware County, so it needs to be determined exactly where John and Jerusha were in 1830.

CENSUS: 1850: US New York, Delaware County, Town of Tompkins, 2nd. Election District, LDS Film No. 0017071, viewed at the LDS Family History Library on 18 January 1997, p. 336: Dwelling 480. John W. Hood, 48 [1802], laborer, Gerusha 47 [1803], Clarinda 10 [1840], Phebe 7 [1843], Charles 2, [1848], all born NY ] There is obviously something wrong here regarding the birth date of Clarinda that needs checking out. There is the possibility that "Clarinda" is Carol C. An unidentified newspaper item reported the marriage of Stocking Jacob, age 69, a farmer from McClure to Carol C. who was born in Hancock and resided in Cannonsville. It said that she was the daughter of John Hood and J. Lewis. If she is "Clarinda" in the census, then she would have been born about 1840 and would have been about 60 at the time of the marriage.

CENSUS: 1855 New York, Delaware County, Town of Tompkins: Dwelling No. 277. Family 6. Line 77. 2nd Enumeration District. Frame house value $200, Family No. 294. John Hood 53 [1802], from Ulster County, lived in Delaware County 10 year, a farmer; Perusah [Jerusha], 52 [1803], wife, 52, born in Delaware County, lived in Delaware County, 52 years; Abilgail Hood 15 [1840], daughter, born in Delaware County, lived here 15 years; Charles, son 7 1848] born Delaware County, lived here 7 years. Abigail is not listed here because she is listed as a servant girl of Herman Fuller (farmer) and Eliza Fuller of the Town of Tompkins, 2nd. Election Dist., Delaware County. Clarinda would have left home by this census. [Why do I have her listed, above, then?] John Hood would not be in the 1840 census or before in Delaware County, then. Was there an 1845 census for Delaware or Ulster Co.?

1860 Census Index for Delaware County, New York: There is no John Hood for Delaware County but one in Broome County. [Check]:

They had the following children:

+        38 F         i.  Clarinda HOOD was born on 18 September 1826 and died on 21 October 1906.

+        39 F         ii.  Jerusha Adaline (Adeline) Hood was born on 1 March 1828 in Orange County, New York. (Betty Peterson Letter to Tom Hahn, 18 November 2000) She married on 7 November 1849 in Delaware County, New York the Reverend Isaac Coleman Jones. (Everton's, The Learning Co., CD 12, Family File Vol. 1, Disk 3, File No. 21027 provided by Betty Peterson). He was born  on 14 January 1847 in Exeter, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and died 1 January 1907 in Tekamah, Burt County, Nebraska. Jerusha Adeline died on 3 May 1910 at Silver Creek, Tekamah, Burt County, Nebraska and was buried there on 4 May. They had Gertrude and three other children. (Peterson Letter)

Betty Peterson bettypet@kdsi.net , in letters to Tom Hahn in 2002, the wife of an Isaac Jones's descendant, comments on the eleven diaries kept by Reverend Jones, the spouse of Jerusha Adaline:

While Isaac was attending college in Lewisburg, PA, he writes about going to Deposit [ Broome County] New York and then on to Father Hood's. After graduation from college at Lewisber, Pennsylvania, the Isaac Jones family stayed with Father Hood for a while before going on to Canaseaga, New York, where Isaac was ordained. Betty Petersen says that she has no idea where Jerusha Addaline and Isaac Jones met, but she thinks that they were married when he went to college at Lewisburg. Jones writes that they left Hornalsville [New York]  on a mail train and reached Binghamton and left there to travel on to Father Hood's. The Jones's then went to Paw Paw, Illinois. and Isaac Jones mentioned going to Galeburg, Illinois to visit George and Araminta Chamberlain about 1860.  In 1858 Isaac Jones received a letter from Abigail Hood. During the Civil War, Isaac joined the army. He also mentions going to visit Aramine  [Araminta] and George Chamberlain. Jones family moved to Delaware Center, Iowa. Betty comments that she thinks that was near Masonville or Marshall, Iowa, and near Sand Springs. They were there in 1864-1865. He also mentions Aunt Phoebe Hood in June 1856 and Isaac wrote a letter to Isaac Hood in 1868. They visited the Chamberlains in 1865. Jones Family moved to Nebraska in 1873. He then mentions in the 1873 diary that he went from  Tekama, Nebraska where he was living, to Red Oak, Iowa to a Silas Chamberlain's where Father Hood was visiting. Isaac shaved Father Hood while visiting the Chamberlains. Maybe the Chamberlain's lived in Red Oak and the wife and family if Father Hood was staying near there and it could have been across the county line to another county. Isaac Jones mentions that he helped George Chamberlains plant corn, so it appears that the Chamberlains were farmers. Betty said in 2000, "I need to re-read some of the papers that I have. I know one Chamberlain Family lived in California, later years. I may have to find that family and see if I can find an obituary for the mother to that group." There has been no suggestion or proof that John Warren Hood and Jerusha lived in Iowa, only that they visited there. Betty wonders if John Hood might have moved to California with one of the Chamberlain families. In several of the letters Isaac Jones mentions receiving letters from "Jehu John," which may have been his contraction for Jerusha and John. [Need to look up the Chamberlain Family in California censuses.]
